How to Have a Not So Healthy Work Life Balance

The opposite of being organized and having an amazing work life and home life is an unhealthy work life balance. Increased responsiblities at work and home and longer working hours can increase daily stress levels. An unhealthy work life balance includes constantly overworking and thinking about work on your off days.

It’s draining and can lead to burnout. Ignoring friends and family because your are consumed with work can destroy relationships. When this is your life, you can easily become stressed and irritated.

Here’s some tips to make changes and with the goal of achieving a balanced work and home life.

  • Remember that you have control of your life. Make good choices everyday. Get in the habit of thinking about your decisions and keep in mind that your decisions today will impact your life tomorrow.
  • Make plans with your friends and family. Set these dates in advance and don’t miss them, if possible.
  • Consider buying a separate phone for work. I have talked to so many people under huge amounts of work stress. They tell me how they answer phones and respond to emails after work hours. When I suggest turning off their work phone, I am shocked to find out that their personal phone is their work phone, so they can be reached at any time. They don’t feel like it’s a good or safe idea to cut off their personal phone. This leads to them having their work phone on at all times.
  • All stress is not bad and most jobs come with some level of stress. The goal is to manage the stress appropriately so you can do a good job. It’s also important to identify and practice coping skills so you can move toward making healthy choices.
